This post will give you tips and tricks to create an inspiring 2022 vision board.
Making a vision board isn’t a new idea. In fact, I was introduced to the concept by watching the Oprah Winfrey talk show. I know… I’m completely dating myself with that statement!
So, what is a vision board?
A collage of images and words representing a person’s wishes or goals, intended to serve as inspiration or motivation. Vision boards are most often used for manifestation and visualization.
Many people including myself use vision boards as a visual representation of their goals.
When I initially learned about these special collages I knew I wanted to make one and give visualization a try. I loved the concept and made my first collage during my senior year of high school and took it with me to college. I’ve been a vision board fan and advocate ever since. I’ve even hosted parties for friends and family.
Even in 2022, vision boards are still a great way to visualize your dreams. The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to make a new vision board. I prefer making vision boards to making New Year’s resolutions. Because like most people, I usually don’t keep my New Year’s resolutions. And I have had more success without the resolutions. So in today’s post, I’d like to share with you my personal vision board process.
How to Create a Vision Board
Now I’m going to walk you through my tried and true vision board process. I make a new board every year. So I have lots of experience. Making a vision board isn’t hard to do, it’s all about having the right mindset. You want to go into this process with a positive, grateful and open heart! According to Rhonda Bryne’s The Secret,
When you want to attract something into your life, make sure your actions don’t contradict your desires.. Think about what you have asked for, and make sure that your actions are mirroring what you expect to receive, and that they’re not contradicting what you‘ve asked for. Act as if you are receiving it. Do exactly what you would do if you were receiving it today, and take actions in your life to reflect that powerful expectation. Make room to receive your desires, and as you do, you are sending out that powerful signal of expectation.”
Gather Your Supplies
You don’t need a lot of supplies to make a vision board. Truthfully, you can make one on your computer with clip art. But, I personally prefer the traditional method using magazine clippings and Pinterest images. As for the supplies, most of them can be purchased at your local Dollar Tree or craft store. Here’s a list.
Supplies:
- Poster Board or Corkboard
- Magazines
- Images from the internet
- Glue or Thumbtacks
- Scissors
- Picture of yourself (optional)
Magazines are one of the most important items needed for this project. Purchasing brand new magazines can be quite expensive. As an alternative, I have two ways of obtaining a good assortment of magazines. First, I ask friends and family if they have any magazines they plan to recycle. Second, I purchased magazines from the local library. My local library sells their old magazines for $.25 each. So I stock up on finance, travel, fashion, fitness, and home decor magazines. In addition, to the magazines, you may want to source images from the internet. Pinterest is a great source for vision board images. Especially if you have a specific goal that isn’t easily found in magazines.
Set the Mood
You want to create your vision board in a relaxing environment. So turn off the television, light a candle, play soft relaxing music in the background. I personally like a playlist called “re-charge/cleanse” on Spotify. You can create your board privately or with a group of friends. I prefer to make my vision board with friends. Making the vision board with friends serves two purposes.
- It’s a fun activity that allows you to learn more about friends
- Making your vision board with friends creates sort of a mastermind group. Your friends can give you advice and be accountability partners for your goal achievement.
If you have goals that are very private or personal that you do not want to share with friends. I recommend creating your vision board alone. Or attending the group vision board party and leaving a section blank of your vision that you complete later when you are alone.
Image Selection
There are two schools of thought regarding the selection of images for your vision board. Some experts recommend developing a written list of goals or aspirations before you begin to cut out images. Then try to find images that reflect your list. In contrast, other experts suggest that you look through the magazines for inspiration and select images that speak to you. Either method will work, I’ve done it both ways.
Side note: If you don’t like the idea of having a vision board that focuses on goal obtainment. An alternative would be to select images that reflect how you want to FEEL in the future. For example, you may want to feel healthier, therefore you should cut out pictures that represent a healthy lifestyle for you.
Design Your Layout
Once you have cut out your images divide your poster into quadrants or sections that reflect your goals and aspirations. You can have as many sections as you like. Some possible sections include finance, travel, love/relationships, career, health, and personal growth. Next place the picture of yourself in the center of the poster. This step is completely optional. However, I find that having a picture of yourself on the board helps me envision myself completing the goals.
Then glue or thumbtack the images in the appropriate sections. Keep in mind that the center of the vision board should hold your most important goals. Because your eyes will naturally focus on the center of the vision board most frequently.
Display You Vision Board
Once your vision board is complete. Choose a sacred place to display it. Choose a location that will allow you to see your board on a daily basis. But the key to making a vision board work for you is to review your images often. Seeing your board in passing is not enough. You should spend some time visualizing the completion of your goals and aspirations. Try to imagine how obtaining your goals will make you feel. If you want to know how visualization really works, I highly recommend you watch the documentary “The Secret”. It’s currently available on Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix.
I’ve always kept my vision boards displayed on a wall in my bedroom. And I try to spend time visualizing my goals on a weekly basis to keep the goals fresh in my mind. I have had a lot of success with past vision boards. And look forward to creating a new one in 2022.
Have you ever made a vision board? Did you successfully obtain any of your goals or aspirations? Do you have a different process?
